Another Netflix Original, Macon Blair’s “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore” is a wild and fun dark comedy odyssey that transcends the standards of social normalcy. The film begins with a quirky nurse (Melanie Lynskey) as she arrives home to discover that it has been broken in to and her possessions stolen.
As she tries to cope with the break-in, she realizes that none of her neighbors care. That is until she encounters an odd individual played by Elijah Wood: a rat tail-wearing, Pontiac driving ninja with aviator sunglasses and a Judas Priest t-shirt. Together, they embark on a surreal and bizarre series of events to confront the people responsible for the break in.
The script is a very nice throwback to previous exploitation films, evoking 2002’s “Spun” and is possibly something that Tarantino or the Coen Brothers might have conceived. Despite this, there isn’t much logic to its premise. It is straightforward, the characters are unintelligent and one dimensional.
This dark comedy may not be on everyone’s radar, but it certainly does make for a good time if you can bare its lackluster silliness: it leaves you asking “what did I just watch?”
