Quick Review: Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Men Tell No Tales by Brian Wallinger

Captain Jack Sparrow, once again played by Johnny Depp squares off against the sinister and undead Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem, who is one of the few positive highlights of the film.  The story is muddled and uninspired with generic and overbearing CGI effects.

Directed by Espen Sanberg and Joachin Ronning, the film does not benefit from two directors.  Though some scenes featuring the action and stunts are entertaining, the film ends up being an expensive and overly forgettable adventure riddled with unnecessary, and at times, confusing fan service.

Joining Depp and Bardem is Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa who absolutely steals the show.  Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scoderlario offer some moments of intrigue, though they never seem to come into complete detail and ultimately become uninteresting.  Depp appeared less charismatic here than in prior entries.

Now playing in theaters, Dead Men Tell No Tales demonstrates that the series is running on a thin line.  Only the truly die-hard fans will find something worth-while.  It is a decent film that had potential, but ends up being a mess.  It should find a wider audience on home video.
